Readex America's Historical Newspapers Collection to Surpass 1300 Titles

Two New Series Will Add Significant Depth to Online Resource Spanning Four Centuries and All 50 States

NAPLES, Fla./Tuesday, January 16, 2007—Readex, a leading publisher of online historical collections, announced today that it will begin adding new series of fully searchable newspapers to its ongoing America’s Historical Newspapers archive in May 2007. Complementing three previously launched series, the two new collections—Early American Newspapers, Series 4, 1756-1922 and Early American Newspapers, Series 5, 1777-1922—will expand the coverage of America’s Historical Newspapers by adding more than 200 new titles, including newspapers of unique historical importance, regional weeklies and big-city dailies.

“Toward Readex’s stated goal of creating the single most comprehensive resource of historical American newspapers, Early American Newspapers, Series 4 and Series 5 together contain about 220 newspapers published between 1756 and 1922, including titles from all 50 present states,” said Remmel Nunn, Readex Vice President of New Product Development. “Based on authoritative bibliographies and selected by a distinguished academic advisory board, the 1,300 newspapers in all five series of America’s Historical Newspapers will enable students and scholars to research, as never before, more than three centuries of American history, culture and daily life.”

Together, these two new series feature U.S. titles of great historical significance, including The Liberator, Albany Evening Journal, Baltimore American and Commercial Advertiser, Gaceta de Texas, Hokubei Jiji, Nevada Territorial Enterprise, New Orleans Daily Creole, North Star, Siwinowe Kesibwi and more. In addition, both new series offer regional weeklies and dailies from across the nation to highlight important themes and eras in American history, including the New York Herald, Boston Press and Post, Chicago Inter Ocean, Cincinnati Daily Gazette, Connecticut Herald, Hawaiian Gazette, Idaho Recorder, Milwaukee Journal of Commerce, Mississippi Free Trader, Nebraska Press, New York Spectator, Oregon Herald, Philadelphia Public Ledger, South Carolina Gazette and many others.

“Following recent improvements to the America’s Historical Newspapers interface, Readex plans to build on those well-received changes by increasing search efficiency and allowing researchers to sort results in new and more meaningful ways,” said Michelle Harper, Director of Product Management.

Through its partnerships with the American Antiquarian Society, Wisconsin Historical Society and more than 90 other institutions, Readex continues to create an immensely rich archive of historical American newspapers. Future series will expand the coverage of America’s Historical Newspapers beyond 1922 to provide unprecedented coverage from 1690 to 1980.
